In The NewsBlount sells stuffed clams - June 1, 2000To better focus on its food-service business, Blount Seafood Corp. has sold its stuffed clam division to Matlaw Food Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of Frozen Specialties, of Archbold, Ohio. Blount will use the proceeds of the transaction – the terms of which were not disclosed – to help develop Blount’s soups/sauces and breaded seafood product lines, two of its fastest-growing divisions. "This move is just one aspect of implementing Blount’s long-term strategic plan, which calls for focus on building our foodservice business," says George Richardson, Blount’s president. "Since most of Blount’s stuffed clam business came from retail sales, it just made sense." Blount is a family-owned company that has been processing clams and other shellfish at its Water Street facility since 1946. Gene Welka, chairman and CEO of Frozen Specialties, says the acquisition should boost Matlaw’s share of the stuffed clam market from 60 percent to 80 percent.
